Chapter 175

At the hospital.

Gu Zhi looked at the B-ultrasound report in his hand, stunned like being struck by five thunders. 10 weeks pregnant, threatened miscarriage.

The doctor handed Gu Zhi the payment slip and medication list, “Your wife has a threatened miscarriage. She needs to be hospitalized now to preserve the pregnancy. Go settle the fees first then get her medications.”

“Doctor, is she okay now?” Gu Zhi asked anxiously.

“You came just in time. The baby is fine for now. Have her take the medications on time, stay in bed resting, no walking around, and avoid emotional distress.”

Gu Zhi didn’t know how he walked out of the doctor’s office.

Sister, she is actually pregnant...

Is she married already? Who is the father of her child?

Gu Zhi went to pay and get the medications. He stopped outside the hospital ward, not daring to step in for the longest time.

“Doctor, where did the person who brought me to the hospital go?” Sang Li urgently asked the nurse administering her IV.

“Don’t worry, he probably went to pay your fees and get your medications. Your baby's heartbeat is unstable now so you mustn't get emotionally worked up. Stay in bed and rest well.”

“Will my baby be okay? Can it be safely preserved?” Sang Li choked up.

“Don't think too much. It's good you came early. Take your IV and medications on time. Stay positive and there will be no issues.” The nurse assured, “Rest well. Press the button by your bed if you need anything.”

After giving instructions, the nurse left the room. Seeing Gu Zhi standing outside, she reminded, “You must soothe your wife’s emotions now and keep her feeling happy.”

“Got it, thanks doctor.”

After the nurse left, Gu Zhi sat down on a bench outside with his head lowered and eyes closed.

He had hoped so much to see Sang Li again. But to reunite under such circumstances, how should he face his sister now?

Her health is so frail presently, with a baby in her belly, she cannot withstand huge emotional turmoil. While half-lying in bed, Sang Li's mind kept echoing Gu Zhi calling her "Sister" earlier.

Despite his mask, that familiar feeling made her suspect.

Could it be you, Zhi?

One inside, one outside, not daring to get near each other, yet both had the other on their minds.

Just then, Gu Xiaoxue came over and anxiously asked, “Hey, Gu Zhi. Is that person from earlier okay?”

Gu Zhi opened his eyes, looked at her sullenly, “Piss off!”

Gu Xiaoxue was startled by Gu Zhi. She had never seen him like this before. At the Gu house he was always meek and compliant, how dare he speak to her this way now?

Seeing his reaction, Gu Xiaoxue didn’t dare say anything more either. She walked straight into the ward.

Gu Zhi wanted to stop her but she had already gone in. He hurriedly followed her in too.

“Auntie, I accidentally bumped into you just now. Don’t worry, I will compensate all your hospital expenses here!” Gu Xiaoxue said to Sang Li.

Sang Li didn’t say anything but looked up towards Gu Zhi behind Gu Xiaoxue instead.

Gu Zhi grabbed Gu Xiaoxue by her collar and pulled her out. “Gu Xiaoxue, I told you to piss off! Didn't you hear me?”

“Gu Zhi, what are you doing? Let me go!” Gu Xiaoxue struggled.

Hearing him being called Gu Zhi, Sang Li stared fixedly at him and weakly called out, “Zhi...”

Gu Zhi instantly froze as his eyes met Sang Li's.

Taking the chance, Gu Xiaoxue broke free of Gu Zhi’s grip. “Gu Zhi, I’m telling you. Don’t expect to get your next semester’s allowance from my mom! Go keep working odd jobs outside!”

The two continued gazing at each other, oblivious to Gu Xiaoxue's presence.

Gu Zhi slowly removed his mask. “Sister...So you still remember me...”

To Gu Zhi, they hadn't seen each other for over ten years. He didn't know when Sang Li returned nor that she was now married and pregnant. Did she still have him in her heart?

Gu Xiaoxue looked suspiciously between them. These two, could they know each other?

Sang Li's eyes turned red. “Is it really you?”

Gu Zhi walked over to the bedside, yearningly looking at her. “It's me. Didn't expect...we would reunite this way.”

Sang Li's eyes dimmed. “So you know everything?”

Thinking she meant the pregnancy, Gu Zhi hesitated before answering. “Yeah...I know everything... Should I...call your...husband for you?” Sang Li stared blankly. “What are you saying?”

“The doctor said your fetus is unstable and you'll need two days hospitalization. Shouldn't your...husband come take care of you?” Gu Zhi asked with difficulty.

How he wished he could cherish her in his palms. What right did that other man have to treat her so perfunctorily? That man didn't deserve Sister at all!

“He...he is very young, still a university student. Knowing I'm pregnant would be too much for him to take.” Sang Li fibbed.

Gu Zhi was stunned. He totally didn't expect this situation at all.

“I don't want him knowing I'm pregnant now. I hope he can focus on studying well. I don't want to stress him.” Sang Li added.

Gu Zhi's face darkened as he unconsciously clenched his fists. “So he doesn't want responsibility?”

“He is underage without the means to provide for a child. How can he take responsibility?” Sang Li retorted.

“Auntie, it is you who is in the wrong to seduce an innocent university kid and getting pregnant with his child. If he knows, he will surely make you abort it!” Gu Xiaoxue suddenly cut in.

Only now remembering Gu Xiaoxue was still here, Gu Zhi immediately went over to drag her out again.

“Hey, Gu Zhi. What are you doing? I advise you to steer clear of such loose women. Cougars like her who entrap younger men and get pregnant out of wedlock lack self-respect. If Father knows you keep such company, he will skin you alive! Don’t disgrace our Gu family!”

Although she disliked Gu Zhi, he still belonged to the Gu household presently. His misdeeds would ruin their reputation.

Hearing Gu Xiaoxue's words, Sang Li was even more convinced now wasn't the time to tell Gu Zhi the truth.

Gu Zhi closed the door and came over without another word.

He took out the medications just collected. “Sister, take your meds first.”

Observing his expression, Sang Li accepted the cup and swallowed the pills.

“Since he isn’t here to care for you, then...you don’t mind if I attend to you here right?” Gu Zhi asked.

“Don’t you...still have to work?”

“I can take a few days off.” Gu Zhi put away the cup and probed, “Sister...are you that intent on having his child?”

Sang Li subconsciously stroked her belly. “My health is poor. Getting pregnant again will be tough. I fought hard to preserve this child. I want a baby regardless whose it is.”

Sang Li looked up at him and said deliberately, "Who asked you to keep refusing me when you were with them back then... If it was your child, I would definitely be much happier."

When Gu Zhi heard these words, it was as if the line of defense in his heart snapped at once. He grabbed Sang Li's hand that was resting on her belly.

His eyes were red, looking like a wounded puppy. "Sister, don't be with that person anymore, okay? I will take care of you and the child... Sister, we are already married, you are my Gu Zhi's wife!"
